Haxxing 3: Getting your way with non-3 branded 3G phones using 3-services.

What position may you be in to want to gain access to "3 services" on a non-3 branded phone? Many carriers out there couldn't give an arse what phone you're using, as long as you're paying them for their service. This is demonstrated to the point where they'll allow you to download their services' settings directly to your phone, from the phone manufacturer's website. Of course, this excludes 3, whose insolent customer service representatives hold that it's not possible to access 3 services (Planet 3, MMS, internet access, etc) on a non-3 branded handset.

This isn't true. You know that I know better than them, and have looked into how to access 3 services on a non-3 branded 3G mobile phone, using a 3 sim card. Right now I'm using a Nokia 6233, which is a 3G Nokia using recent standard firmware, same as the 6280 and others, but not the same as N-series phones or the N-Gage.

Packet Data

So you've got your compatible Nokia phone w/ 3 simcard? Sweet. We'll begin. First thing you'll need to do is get your Packet Data service up and running (Settings ? Connectivity ? Packet Data ? Packet data settings). If the Active access point has a name, or you've used internet services on the phone before, feel free to click this menu item and select an empty slot (an empty "Access point #"). Then edit the active access point, specifying the alias as "Mobile internet" and the access point as "3netaccess". Now your packet-data connection is set up, you can get onto specifying the services that use this connection.

Personal configuration and Web access

Get into the Configuration menu (Settings ? Configuration). Depending on your phone's prior settings, you may have configuration settings built into the phone already – I had "Optus Zoo" stuff there; baleeted. First, we go to the "Personal config. settings" and create some accounts. If there are some services there already, it'd be wise to note down their details and then delete them, to ensure that your new ones are picked up properly. Start by adding a new Application (Options menu), add an "Access point". Set the Account name to "Planet 3", and its settings as follows: Data Bearer: Packet Data (inside these Settings, set the Packet data access point to "3services"). Hit back to the Personal accounts window, and add a new "Web" application. Set the Account name to "Planet 3", the Homepage to http://three.net.au/vws/getnow.do or http://three.net.au/vws/getgrid.do and ask it to use the preferred access point (which will be our "Planet 3" access point).

MMS and other settings

Enabling the settings

Back in the Configuration menu, we first need to set the Preferred access point to "Planet 3", and the Default config. settings to "Personal configuration". And all should be dandy – You can access Planet 3 by going to your phone's desktop and holding "0" for 1 second, with streaming video happening by default. MMS should now work, while video calling should happen without any prior configuration. Enjoy sticking it to the man, or in the case of 3, the girly-man!
